As a Student Rep you will part of the first and largest tier of our representation system at Bucks Students’ Union. As one of our network of 150 reps, you will feedback directly to the University staff on academic issues through regular Programme Committee Meetings, ensuring that the University maintains commitment to quality education and protects your welfare.
You will have been elected by your peers to this position and, as with any other of our elected officers, are accountable to them. By gathering and presenting the collective views of your peers to the University, you ensure that assumptions are not made about the student experience. In all of the duties you undertake as a Student Rep you must present the collective view of students on your course: sometimes this will mean that you have to put aside your own views and act in the best interests of your peers if the majority of your constituents feel differently from yourself. It is also important that you communicate the committee responses back to the students you represent (whether they’re positive, negative or a little non-existent!), closing the feedback loop and letting your peers know what you have done with all the information you have taken from them.
You may also find that you are often the first point of contact for students with issues or concerns, or even just general queries about the Union. You are not expected to be experts (we have full-time officers and a range of staff for that!) and we will provide you with all of the information that you will need in introductory training and through regular briefings throughout the year.
Finally, in order for us to ensure that the support we offer you throughout your time as Rep remains relevant, we need you to feedback your committee activities to the Students’ Union using the Student Rep Online Feedback Form. Using the data collected here we can monitor and look for trends in the issues being raised by Reps across the institution, ensure that Committees are following up on points raised in previous meetings, and generally ensure that you are as prepared as possible for future meetings.
And don't forget, if you fulfil all of these criteria and help us elect your successor you will receive a reward of up to £100! Check out the Rewards page for further details.
